Managing chronic swelling can require more than one treatment approach. Compression garments, movement, elevation, skin care, and guidance from a healthcare provider may all be part of an individualized care plan. For some patients, that plan may also include a pneumatic compression device.


Pneumatic compression devices use controlled air pressure to inflate and deflate chambers within a specialized garment. It may help to associate treatment with an existing routine, such as reading, watching television, answering emails, or relaxing at the end of the day.


Learning How to Apply the Garment


The garment must be placed correctly so that the treatment is comfortable and works as intended. Patients with limited mobility, reduced hand strength, pain, or difficulty reaching the affected area may need assistance.


A proper equipment setup and patient demonstration can make home use feel significantly more manageable.


Adjusting to the Sensation

Patients should seek prompt medical guidance for symptoms such as:

  • Sudden or severe pain

  • New warmth or redness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Sudden swelling that is different from the patient’s usual symptoms

  • Open skin, drainage, or signs of infection

  • Changes in skin color or temperature

These symptoms should not be dismissed as a normal response to compression therapy.

Pneumatic compression devices are medical devices and should be used under the direction of a qualified healthcare provider.


A provider should review the patient’s complete medical history, particularly when the patient has or may have:

  • A blood clot or suspected deep vein thrombosis

  • Active cellulitis or another infection

  • Significant arterial disease

  • Uncontrolled heart failure

  • Open wounds or fragile skin

  • Reduced sensation in the affected area

  • Severe pain or unexplained swelling

  • Recent surgery

  • Another condition that could make compression inappropriate

This does not mean every person with one of these concerns will automatically be unable to use pneumatic compression. It means the decision should be made by the patient’s treating healthcare professional rather than through self-diagnosis or the purchase of a general wellness device online.

A pneumatic compression device is only helpful when the patient understands how to use it safely and consistently.

Patients should know:

  • How to position the garment
